If you use a different email provider that is not listed in our main guides, you can still easily update your security. While every website looks a bit different, almost all of them use the exact same steps to protect your information. Please take your time and follow along at your own pace.

What you will need:

  • Your current email password.

  • A pen and a secure notebook to write down your new password so you don't forget it.

Step-by-Step Guide to Change Your Password

  1. Sign in to your email account on your computer or tablet using your internet browser.

  2. Look at the top-right or top-left corner of the screen for a gear icon (Settings), a picture icon, or your initials, and click on it.

  3. Look for a menu option named "Account", "Security", "Settings", or "Privacy" and click on it.

  4. Find the section that says "Change Password" or "Password".

  5. Enter your current password if the website asks you to confirm it is really you.

  6. Create a new password:

  • Use at least 3 simple hyphenated words, each starting with a capital letter (e.g., Home-Dog-Work).

  • Do not use names, surnames, or locations that are personally related to you.

  • Add at least 4 numbers (e.g., Home-Dog-Work-1918).

  1. Write your new password down in your secure notebook before moving on.

  2. Type your new password into the box provided, and type it again in the next box to confirm it.

  3. Click the "Save", "Update", or "Change Password" button.

Your new password is now active! Changing your password will usually sign you out of your email on your other devices (like your phone or tablet). You will need to sign back in using your new password.

Adding an Extra Layer of Security (Two-Step Verification)

While you are still in your account security settings, it is highly recommended to turn on extra protection. This is often called Two-Step Verification. This means that along with your password, you will also use your phone to confirm it is really you, stopping anyone else from accessing your email.

Step-by-Step Guide to Turn on Extra Protection

  1. Stay in the same "Security" or "Account" menu where you changed your password.

  2. Look for a section named "Two-Step Verification", "Two-Step Authentication".

  3. Click the button or link next to it to turn it on.

  4. Choose the option to use your "Phone number" or "Text message (SMS)" to receive security codes.

  5. Enter your mobile phone number in the box provided.

  6. Check your mobile phone for a short verification code sent by your email provider.

  7. Type that exact code into the box on your computer screen.

  8. Click "Verify", "Confirm", or "Save".

Your extra security is now active! Now, if anyone tries to enter your email from a new or unrecognized device, you will get a notification or text code asking to confirm it is really you.
